Elle laisse dans le deuil ses soeurs: Marguerite, Ozéline (feu Armand Larocque), Pauline (feu William Mill) et Thérèse (Henry Hirschfeld) ainsi que plusieurs neveux, nièces, parents et amis. Exposée au 2126, Notre-Dame, Lachine.
Les funérailles auront lieu le lundi 12 avril à 14 h en la chapelle de la résidence et de là au cimetière de Lachine. Heures de visites: dimanche de 14 à 16 h et de 19 à 22 h. Remerciements sincères à tout le personnel de la Résidence Yvon Brunet pour leurs bons soins et leur compassion.

Denis Lavoie passed away on Sunday, October 16, 2022, at the age of 67 of lung cancer. He was a devoted husband to his late wife (Aline Lavoie), caring father, loving brother and grandfather and an honorable friend. He will be dearly missed by his daughter Melanie Roy (Pierre-Paul Roy) and his grandchildren, Evan Roy and Caleb Roy. He was the son of the late Victor Lavoie and late Aline Whissell and brother of Bob, Paul, Claudette, Diane, Pierre, Jeanne, Huguette, Guy, Lorraine, Lise and Rolland (predeceased by his brothers, Roger and Maurice).

Denis was passionate about his trade (steamfitter), enjoyed his fishing trips and found joy in helping others.

Family and friends are invited to a service in memory of Denis at Beechwood Funeral, Cemetery and Cremation Services (280 Beechwood Avenue, Ottawa), on Thursday, October 27 at 10:00 AM, followed by a reception.

En 1841, J.B. Lavoie, un boucher, avait construit une petite maison de bois, du cote nord de la rue St Patrick. Elle sera vendue par lui aux Soeurs Grises qui y installerent un modeste hopital. Homme charitable, Lavoie se chargea du pot-au-feu des religieuses pendant trois mois, comme le raconte Soeur Paul-Emile. A la page 106 de son livre, Ross dit que J.B. Lavoie etait "a butcher of the olden time, who furnished roasts and steaks most prime". La fille de J.B. se fit religieuse a l'age de 15 ans. Elle soigna les malades, fut pharmacienne et sacristaine pendant six ans puis devint superieure de la Maison des Soeurs Grises a Plattsburg. Elle mourra a Ottawa en 1887 apres une longue maladie. Les registres des mariages a Notre-Dame d'Ottawa, indique que J.B. Lavoie, veuf d'Aurelie Levesque, epouse le 22 febrier 1861, Catherine Joyce. Il est dit que Lavoie avait des fils mais aucune mention n'est faite d'eux dans le registre.

Eugene a travaille pendant 6 ou 7 ans dans les chantiers de la compagnie Gillis comme laveur de linge, bucheron surtout dans la region de Fort Coulonge, Quebec. Il n'avait que 14 ans environ a sa premiere annee de chantier. D'ailleurs il a achete un violon pour $1.00 dans le temps d'un allemand qu'il a remit a son fils Bill. Mon oncle Bill l'a encore. Le violon fut construit en 1927 et etait une copie d'une certaine sorte de Stratevarius de 1734.

Mme Rose-Blanche Charron, de Hull, et ses deux fils, Loyola et Clifford, étaient à Blezard Valley pour le mariage de Mlle Jacqueline Charron à M. Edgar Lavoie.

Faut absolument chercher son contrat de mariage, ou son bapteme pour confirmer qu'il fut le fils de Jean-Baptiste Lavoie et M-Clemence Longpre. J'ai trouve le mariage mais non pas le bapteme. Son mariage ne mentionne pas ses parents. Si Louis Lavoie est bien le fils de Jean-Baptiste Lavoie et M-Clemence Longpre, comment ce fait-il que nul de ses freres et soeurs sont parain marraine a aucun de ses enfants??? En plus il n'est pas mentionné dans aucun bapteme des enfants de ses oncles et tantes (ses enfants seraient ses cousins).

Lors des recherches effectuées sur la famille Louis Lavoie et Marie-Therese Cleroux, bien que j'ai beau chercher je ne peux pas trouver le baptême de Louis, fils de Jean-Bte et M-Clemence Longpre.

Lors de son mariage avec M-Therese Cleroux, et lors de son décès, les parents de Louis ne sont pas mentionnés. En cherchant dans le PRDH je m'aperçois que notre Louis pourrait bien être le fils de Louis-Michel Lavoie et Marie Monteuil-Sédilot. Leur fils Louis est né en 1788 ce qui lui donnerait 23 ans lors du mariage en 1811. Il n'y eut que 3 Louis Lavoie nés a St-Martin durant ce cadre 1783-1790, et j'ai pu en rayer 2 d'entreux a cause des années de naissance et décès.

Friends rush to aid family after fatal crash

Friends of a man killed in a head-on collision near West Lorne
Saturday are scrambling to find a way to help his injured widow and their six children.
Jeffery Kenneth Sallows, 45, of RR 3, Newbury, died at the scene of the accident just before noon Saturday.
His wife, Elizabeth Sallows, 39, who was a passenger, was listed in fair condition at London Health Sciences Centre, South Street campus last night.
The Sallows were heading east into West Lorne on Pioneer Line about 11:50 a.m., when their car crossed into the westbound lane and collided with a dump truck driven by Martin Joris, 43, of Watford.
Rev. Roy Wood, pastor of Ambassador Baptist Church in London, which the Sallows attended, said the family is not well off and, if there is
insurance, it will be small. The children are staying with the Wood family, who live near West Lorne. But the Woods have six children of their own. "Some folks are wondering how they can help," said Wood, adding he'll look into setting up a fund for the family at the TD Bank at Adelaide and Dundas streets today.
The Sallows children are Sarah, 15; Leah, 13; Luke, 10; Rachel, 7;Ethan, 5; and Thomas, 3.
Wood said Jeff Sallows and Joris were friends who worked together for a concrete contractor from the Newbury area.
Joris, who received minor injuries in the crash, was driving a Rydt Bros. Ltd. company truck. Wood said Sallows "was just one of those really fine men . . . But he had some medical problems and never got in a good financial situation." Sallows had only recently recovered enough from his health problems to qualify for a driver's licence, Wood said. He was using a graduated licence, with his wife as the fully licensed driver in the car with him, when he was in the collision.
Wood believes the Sallows were on a regular trip at the time. "Every Saturday morning, they went out on a date."
The Sallows family had been living in an apartment in London until they bought a small house near Newbury.
It doesn't have a basement and didn't have indoor plumbing for a while, Wood said. "They were just determined as much as possible not to rely on government assistance." With the purchase of the house and Jeff Sallows' job, "they were just progressing step by step."

There was some question the other day on the QUEBEC-L list about the origins
of the Whissel family who settled around St André Avellin, Qc. in the
mid-1800's, and some of whose descendants were in Sudbury in the early
1900's.

The first Whisell who came to Canada was Zachary Whesel, born about 1810 in
New York state, s/o George Zachary Vesel. George Zachary Vesel emigrated
from Alsace to the US around 1780-1790. Whether he was a Hessian or not is
not stated in the book that I have (La fascinante épopée de
Saint-André-Avellin, by Jacques Lamarche, Editions Petite-Nation, 1996).
But I wouldn't be surprised if perhaps he could be George Vensell, or
Wentzel who is listed in John's book "Guide to help you find your Hessian
Soldier of the American Revolution", pg 86 although that Vensell may have
settled in PA and not NY. John might be able to provide more info on that.

Zachary Whesel settled in Alexandria, Ont. where he married Eva Fischer.
>From Alexandria he moved to St Andrews East, Que. He raised four boys (the
article doesn't mention any girls): Stephen (Etienne), Frederick, Samuel
and Isaac. Etienne's grandson moved to Papineauville, and the latter's son
to St André-Avellin.
Others may know more about the migration of the other children's descendants
in other parts of Canada.

Dear Paul-Antoine,

Thank you very much for getting back to me. The mystery of our ancestor, Christopher Whiessiel, has been a part of family lore for as long as any of us can remember. I am very excited to hear that you too have heard the tale of the “7 brothers”. Since you have had no idea of our Christopher it makes the connection all the more intriguing. I have copied this email to my cousins, Dr. Robert Whissiel of Seattle, Washington, and Ms. Karel Horsley of Toronto. They have been researching the family name for decades and have been a true inspiration to me on this journey.

Although it is difficult to say exactly where Christopher was born, the many censuses that he shows up in have him of German or French heritage. His son listed his birthplace as New York in the United States Census of 1880. My grandmother always told me his name was Christopher Lucius Addison LeMab Fischer Whiessiel. He was from a family of United Empire Loyalists, he was the 7th son of a 7th son, and that all of his brothers came to Canada as lumbermen.

Based upon your record indicating Zacharie’s father was named George, I did some “surfing” on the internet and found an intriguing record. There is a Georg(e) Wissel listed in a immigration record showing him coming to North America as a Hessian soldier in the Brunswick regiment. That regiment was stationed exclusively in Quebec and upstate New York. In fact, they fought in the Battle of Skenesborough! The record shows that he came to an unknown port in 1776 and that he was born in 1751.

If George had stayed in North America, it would be very probable that he would have been in the Skenesborough area at the end of the war, or he could have come back there at its conclusion. There were several British forts in the area. However I can find no records of a George Wissel or Whissel (or Whiessel, Wizel, etc.) for that matter.

I also find the St. Andre-Avellin connection intriguing. There is a death record for a Z. Josephe Whissel in Russell Ontario (I’ll look it up and send it to you) - - I think she died in about 1882. She was born in St. Andre-Avellin. Could this be Zacharie’s daughter? Christopher’s family, and another family of Whissel’s that I believe to be Christopher’s brother (or nephew?) Mathew’s family all lived in Russell for a number of years. It is such a small village that I have to believe they would have been related in some way with a name like Whissel.

He died at a very young age. I was told that he was born with a hole in his heart. He was a smoker and had asthma. We received a letter saying he was accepted at the heart institute in Montreal, 2 weeks after his death.

According to the 1949 Ottawa City Directory, Victor worked as a truck driver for Mahoney and Rich, same time as his father Antoine.

He was a very religious man. Loved to fish, small game hunting. Loved by everyone who knew him. Fabulous human being. Hard worker who loved the simple things.

I think of him every day (today is Nov 15 2004, which is 35 years later) and I still do Jumble puzzles in the Ottawa Citizen in his honor, which makes me think of him again. He loved to do those and when young I used to try to complete them. That was one of his ways to make us learn English. I loved the guy, wish he was still here. I never knew him as much as I would have wanted to. I knew him as a loving father, but he died before we had a chance to talk and mingle as equals. He was too busy raising a family. He was a great father, taking Bob and I fishing and hunting everytime he went. That in itself was a great memory. He wouldn't take the 2 of us each time, but only one.. and he would alternate. Of course both of us knew that the other was hiding in the car so as not to be seen, and I remember crying because I couldn't go with him and I knew that Bob was hiding in the car. Such great memories. Thanks Dad. Hope you saved a spot in heaven for me. Everybody you knew knows you bypassed purgatory and went directly there. Say hi to mom for me. Love her too.

He enlisted in the army in Kingston Ontario on the 10th June 1943, and was discharged on the 23 February 1946.

*Note: On his wedding picture, it is very clear as to the name of the church, i.e. N-D de la Presentation, which was in Overbrooke. Twice in Marriage Register books, I see his wedding as part of Cyrville (N-D de Lourdes) ????? N-D de Lourdes, Cyrville was founded in 1946. The marriage probably took place in the basement of the school.

In the picture of Victor (3 or 4 yrs old?) in front of the Lavoie tombstone, I noticed that the front of the stone only carried the name of Marie-Louise Lavoie. The name of Phelonize Lafleur still hadn't been placed there. Phelonize died in 1924 the year that Victor was born.
Was Phelonize remains moved later on? Was this a new stone to replace an older one?

Victor apparently (so says uncle J-Paul) initially bought the lot at 36 Joliette (maison Lefebvre, subsequently had money problems and had to sell it. He later bought the lot on Garneau St for $50.00 from the city.
