Friends rush to aid family after fatal crash

Friends of a man killed in a head-on collision near West Lorne
Saturday are scrambling to find a way to help his injured widow and their six children.
Jeffery Kenneth Sallows, 45, of RR 3, Newbury, died at the scene of the accident just before noon Saturday.
His wife, Elizabeth Sallows, 39, who was a passenger, was listed in fair condition at London Health Sciences Centre, South Street campus last night.
The Sallows were heading east into West Lorne on Pioneer Line about 11:50 a.m., when their car crossed into the westbound lane and collided with a dump truck driven by Martin Joris, 43, of Watford.
Rev. Roy Wood, pastor of Ambassador Baptist Church in London, which the Sallows attended, said the family is not well off and, if there is
insurance, it will be small. The children are staying with the Wood family, who live near West Lorne. But the Woods have six children of their own. "Some folks are wondering how they can help," said Wood, adding he'll look into setting up a fund for the family at the TD Bank at Adelaide and Dundas streets today.
The Sallows children are Sarah, 15; Leah, 13; Luke, 10; Rachel, 7;Ethan, 5; and Thomas, 3.
Wood said Jeff Sallows and Joris were friends who worked together for a concrete contractor from the Newbury area.
Joris, who received minor injuries in the crash, was driving a Rydt Bros. Ltd. company truck. Wood said Sallows "was just one of those really fine men . . . But he had some medical problems and never got in a good financial situation." Sallows had only recently recovered enough from his health problems to qualify for a driver's licence, Wood said. He was using a graduated licence, with his wife as the fully licensed driver in the car with him, when he was in the collision.
Wood believes the Sallows were on a regular trip at the time. "Every Saturday morning, they went out on a date."
The Sallows family had been living in an apartment in London until they bought a small house near Newbury.
It doesn't have a basement and didn't have indoor plumbing for a while, Wood said. "They were just determined as much as possible not to rely on government assistance." With the purchase of the house and Jeff Sallows' job, "they were just progressing step by step."
