The first Whisell who came to Canada was Zachary Whesel, born about 1810 in
New York state, s/o George Zachary Vesel. George Zachary Vesel emigrated
from Alsace to the US around 1780-1790. Whether he was a Hessian or not is
not stated in the book that I have (La fascinante épopée de
    Saint-André-Avellin, by Jacques Lamarche, Editions Petite-Nation, 1996).
But I wouldn't be surprised if perhaps he could be George Vensell, or
Wentzel who is listed in John's book "Guide to help you find your Hessian
Soldier of the American Revolution", pg 86 although that Vensell may have
settled in PA and not NY. John might be able to provide more info on that.

Zachary Whesel settled in Alexandria, Ont. where he married Eva Fischer.
    >From Alexandria he moved to St Andrews East, Que. He raised four boys (the

    Date: Wed, 5 Dec 2001 11:37:22 -0500

I'm following up on a lead given to me by Gary Boivin about the spouse of my
great-grandaunt Alice Burns. She married Germain Poirier I figure sometime
around 1845 as their first child Amable Germain Poirier was baptised 31 Jan
1847 at St. Alphonsus, Chapeau, Pontiac Co. with sponsors Bernard Byrn and
Mary Cahill. There isn't a record of their marriage from 1846 onward.

The story goes that a lady named Marguerite Treganning has written a book in
French in which she says a family named Whessel came to Canada and the
parents died aboard ship. The youngest lad Pierre Germain Whessel was taken
in / adopted by a Poirier family west of Montreal. Since the Poiriers
already had a son named Pierre he used his middle name of Germain. He was
never again seen by his 2 much older brothers who were placed near
St-Andre-Avellin, Quebec (Petite Nation, Papineau, Co). There is apparently
a record that shows that he married an Irish girl with the last name of
    Burns.

After a search on the Internet the only place I could find for the name
Whessel was at St-Andre-Avellin so possibly the older brothers kept their
    names???

Can anyone help me further with this mystery please? Is Whessel a French
name? certainly Pierre and Germain are French names. My only other clue is a
photo of Amable which shows him to be about 6' 5" with long white hair and
    beard.

    Thanks for any help,

    Dear Paul-Antoine,

Thank you very much for getting back to me. The mystery of our ancestor, Christopher Whiessiel, has been a part of family lore for as long as any of us can remember. I am very excited to hear that you too have heard the tale of the “7 brothers”. Since you have had no idea of our Christopher it makes the connection all the more intriguing. I have copied this email to my cousins, Dr. Robert Whissiel of Seattle, Washington, and Ms. Karel Horsley of Toronto. They have been researching the family name for decades and have been a true inspiration to me on this journey.

Although it is difficult to say exactly where Christopher was born, the many censuses that he shows up in have him of German or French heritage. His son listed his birthplace as New York in the United States Census of 1880. My grandmother always told me his name was Christopher Lucius Addison LeMab Fischer Whiessiel. He was from a family of United Empire Loyalists, he was the 7th son of a 7th son, and that all of his brothers came to Canada as lumbermen.

Based upon your record indicating Zacharie’s father was named George, I did some “surfing” on the internet and found an intriguing record. There is a Georg(e) Wissel listed in a immigration record showing him coming to North America as a Hessian soldier in the Brunswick regiment. That regiment was stationed exclusively in Quebec and upstate New York. In fact, they fought in the Battle of Skenesborough! The record shows that he came to an unknown port in 1776 and that he was born in 1751.

If George had stayed in North America, it would be very probable that he would have been in the Skenesborough area at the end of the war, or he could have come back there at its conclusion. There were several British forts in the area. However I can find no records of a George Wissel or Whissel (or Whiessel, Wizel, etc.) for that matter.

I also find the St. Andre-Avellin connection intriguing. There is a death record for a Z. Josephe Whissel in Russell Ontario (I’ll look it up and send it to you) - - I think she died in about 1882. She was born in St. Andre-Avellin. Could this be Zacharie’s daughter? Christopher’s family, and another family of Whissel’s that I believe to be Christopher’s brother (or nephew?) Mathew’s family all lived in Russell for a number of years. It is such a small village that I have to believe they would have been related in some way with a name like Whissel.

I look forward to further correspondence,

    Sincerely,

    Ian B. Hendry

On the night of December 25, 1776, General George Washington and his troops crossed the Delaware River at Trenton, New Jersey, launching a surprise attack against the Hessians, German mercenaries hired to fight on behalf of the British Empire. The Germans, caught off-guard on the morning after Christmas celebrations, were defeated after only forty-five minutes. Hessian Colonel Johann Gottlieb Rall was mortally wounded.
Was George Wissell a Hessian, German mercenary soldier? Research the 1777 Battle of Red Bank in New Jersey USA, a battle fought to capture Fort Mercer on the left bank of the Delaware river, the Hessians suffered 377 casualties out of 2,000 ordered to lay siege. The Americans, integrated regiments of Black and white soldiers fighting for freedom, numbered 500 and lost only 14 soldiers.

Tips from genealogists on the web, email address ( CHAMPLAINLG-VALLEY-L@rootsweb.com )

I have been looking at the Lower Canada land petition that I think you are referring too. It is a group petition under the name of the leader Jacob Marston first applied for in 1792. This group petition had about 40 names, one of the names is George Wifsell. They wanted to start a township named Portland, just north of Buckingham along the Ottawa River (Grand River). The original petition was rejected since the men on the list were not "known" to those in power. I think the petition was revised with just ten names, George Wifsell not being one of them, and later approved around 1808.

Something I found interesting about this record is that my Aunt had said that the Whissell’s started a homestead in Masham Que. The only Masham township I could find on a map showed Masham to be further north up the Ottawa River, but the petition drawn up by Jacob Marston in 1792 talks about a Masham to the south of Buckingham, which is the area of St. Andre Avellin.

If your ancestors were Roman Catholics, there are some repertoires available for the Whitehall area. Also, I've found some info about my ancestors in Fort Edward, NY, and Hudson Falls, NY.
Good luck, and I hope this helps.

About your George Wessels x Sophia Freeland.

    Here are some thoughts.
-- Have you searched for Joris Wessels? I tried that name in Ancestry.com but didn't find anyone of the appropriate age. My guess is that he'd been baptized "Joris."
-- From your dates, I'm assuming Sophia would have been born in the mid 1700's. Our database does show a Sophia b 4 May 1760 -- one possibility
-- You probably know that ladies back then w/ given name Sophia often were baptized as "Fitje." We also have a Feytje [Fitje] b 17 Aug 1752 -- another possibility
